From Budapest: Lake Balaton, Tihany & Esztergom

What can you look forward to?

Full description

Some days you want to conquer a city. This is not that day. This is the one where you swap Budapest’s tram bells and tourist crush for big open water, lavender-scented hills and the kind of horizon that lowers your shoulders by about three centimetres. We point the van at Lake Balaton — Hungary’s “inland sea”, and yes, it really is that big — and let the countryside do the talking.

You’ll wander the Tihany peninsula, all sleepy lanes, abbey views and that particular smell of herbs and lake air, then stand under the colossal basilica at Esztergom, perched over the Danube like it’s quietly showing off (it is). There’s real free time at each stop — actual minutes to sit by the water, grab a coffee, take the photo and then just look at the thing with your own eyes. Your friendly local English-speaking guide handles the where and the why; you handle the relaxing.

It’s a full day out, so there’s a fair bit of scenic van time between the pretty bits — but that’s rather the point. You doze, you watch Hungary roll past the window, maybe nibble a little snack for the road, and you arrive home that evening feeling like you actually went somewhere, not like you sprinted through a checklist.

Good to know: It’s a full day with a good amount of scenic driving between stops — comfy, but bring your relaxed-road-trip mood rather than a tight schedule.
